1 – What are Centauri's Stem Cells and what are they for?

Centauri-produced Stem Cells are very versatile cells with high regenerative capacity as well as high modulating capacity of the immune system.
These cells are obtained from a sample of fatty tissue from your animal, they are purified and expanded in a laboratory (“in vitro culture”) and they are sent back in a vial to your veterinarian, who administers them at the lesion site of your animal.

Centauri-produced Stem Cells have the potential to transform themselves into bone, muscle, tendon or cartilage, depending on the type of osteoarticular lesion to be treated. This Stem Cell treatment is currently the best treatment alternative in lesions in which inflammation is present (lameness, bone fractures, sprains, traumas, etc.), either in muscles, tendons, cartilage, as well as in joint lesions with a degenerative chronic component.

Centauri-produced Stem Cells are also very effective in certain diseases with an inflammatory component or with an alteration of the animal’s immune system.

Centauri´s Stem Cells have these three main characteristics:

  1. High anti-inflammatory capacity, much greater than any other drug and treatment

  2. Regenerative capacity of muscle tissue, tendons, cartilage or bone, because the Stem Cells are cells able to transform themselves into these tissues, according to regeneration needs of the animal.

  3. Stem Cells, due to their innate abilities, are able to specifically adapt to each animal´s injury and exert their immuno-modulatory action, their regenerative action or both.

2 – What diseases can be treated with Centauri´s Stem Cells?

In general, the types of lesions with best response to treatment with Centauri´s Stem Cells are those that involve a great inflammation: limps, fractures, sprains, and also some problems related to allergies or alterations of the immune system.

More specifically:

  1. Muscle, tendon or cartilage injuries, whether acute or chronic.
  2. Degenerative joint injuries: dysplasia, osteoarthritis.
  3. Bone fractures.
  4. Systemic (general) diseases that have an inflammatory component related to the immune system.
  5. Dermatitis

Centauri´s Stem Cells have these three main characteristics:

  • High anti-inflammatory capacity, much greater than any other drug and treatment.

  • Regenerative capacity of muscle tissue, tendons, cartilage or bone, because the Stem Cells are undifferentiated cells able to transform themselves into these tissue lines, according to needed by the animal.

  • Immuno-regulatory capacity

Stem Cells, due to their innate abilities, are able to specifically adapt to the each animal´s injury and exert their immuno-modulatory action, their regenerative action or both.

3 – What are the expected results of Stem Cell treatment?

– STEM CELLS are the best current alternative to treat problems that occur with an inflammatory component, or when there are injured tissues of muscle, tendon, cartilage or bone.

– The expected result of treatment with STEM CELLS is that, in a few days / weeks, your animal will finish the recovery process and will experience a considerable improvement of the problem for which it has been treated, many times, recovering all or almost all of the pre-injury functionality.

– CENTAURI has developed the treatment with STEM CELLS from the experimental results that it has obtained.

4 – What alternatives do I have to Stem Cell therapy?

– In some cases, the alternatives to treatment with Stem Cells are the common anti-inflammatory drugs: specifically, a group of drugs called NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) and Cortisone. There is also the treatment with Growth Factors (Platelet-Rich Plasma), which Centauri is offering, either alone or in combination with the Stem Cell treatment.

– However, conventional anti-inflammatories cannot be placed at the same level as the Stem Cell therapy, for different reasons:

  1. NSAIDs and Cortisone have much lower anti-inflammatory effect than Stem Cells.
  2. NSAIDs and Cortisone have many side effects (unwanted), for example, they damage the stomach´s wall.
  3. Cortisone, in particular, has another unwanted side effect: joints and cartilage degeneration, in addition to the unwanted effects in its oral administration.
  4. The duration of the anti-inflammatory effect of NSAIDs and Cortisone is much lower than that of Stem Cells.
  5. NSAIDs and Cortisone are prescribed over a long period of time; Therefore, they have a recurring cost that Stem Cells do not have.
  6. Stem Cells have a regulatory immune component that neither NSAIDs nor Cortisone have.
  7. Stem Cells are implanted (they remain) in the place where they are administered, and this is something that neither NSAIDs nor Cortisone do. Therefore, Stem Cells have a double effect: long duration and tissue repair.

– Treatment with Centauri´s Stem Cells is currently the best alternative for the treatment of lesions whose main cause is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, cartilage, as well as of the articular lesions with a chronic degenerative component. It is also the option that offers better results for the treatment of some diseases that have an allergic inflammatory component.

According to the lesion type and to each individual animal, the treatment with Centauri’s Stem Cells may have different results, always with greater activity than other conventional treatments.

Centauri is at your disposal to directly answer your questions in this regard.

5 – What animals can be treated with Centauri´s Stem Cells?

Theoretically, all animal species could be treated with Stem Cells. Centauri has the protocol ready for horses, dogs, cats and camels (given their interest in the Middle East market). However, you can check with us for other types of animals.

6 – How is the treatment with Centauri´s Stem Cells?

In summary, the procedure of the Stem Cells treatment is the following one:

    • Your veterinarian will evaluate the lesion and the convenience of the treatment with Stem Cells; for this purpose, the veterinarian will have all the support from Centauri. He will propose you the type of treatment with Stem Cells that best suits your animal’s injury.

    • The veterinarian will get a sample of your animal’s fat; usually, he could do it with local anesthesia, depending on circumstances. It is a very simple intervention.

    • The veterinarian will send to Centauri the sample of fatty tissue inside a specific container that will help Centauri when collecting the sample of fatty tissue.
Centauri will perform the process of obtaining the Stem Cells.

    • In a few days your veterinarian will receive a vial with the Stem Cells to administer the treatment to your animal through an infiltration at the injury site, depending on the problem to be treated.

    • In a few days / weeks you will see a substantial improvement of the injury of your animal.

7 – How is Centauri´s Stem Cell treatment hired?

It is very easy and fast. Ask your veterinarian to contact Centauri to give him all the needed support to assess and manage the treatment of your animal with Stem Cells. If you wish, alternatively we can put you in contact with specialist veterinarians in your area.

If you are a veterinarian: access to the specific space for veterinarians of this website, and follow the corresponding instructions. In short, all you have to do is inform Centauri about the day you are planning to remove the fatty tissue sample with the purpose that a courier stops by your clinic to pick up the sample. Centauri will perform the Stem Cells obtaining and will return a small sterile vial with the cells for you to administer the treatment to the animal. You will find instructions and all the information so that you can carry out the Cell Therapy treatment with Stem Cells in an easy, agile and safe way.

8 – Is Centauri Biotech a company of recognized prestige and solvency?

Centauri has negotiated the inclusion of this treatment with insurance companies.

On the other hand, there is a hiring method for the Stem Cell treatment with Centauri that provides a fractionated payment in advance of the treatment with Stem Cells, considering that it could be required. See details in this link.

9 – Is there any type of insurance policy that covers the Stem Cell treatment offered by Centauri?

Centauri has negotiated the inclusion of this treatment with insurance companies.

On the other hand, there is a hiring method for the Stem Cell treatment with Centauri that provides a fractionated payment in advance of the treatment with Stem Cells, considering that it could be required. See details in this link.

10 – What are the payment methods for the services offered by Centauri?

If you are an animal´s owner, the easiest way is to hire the services through your trustworthy veterinarian. You could tell Centauri the name of the veterinarian to contact with him, or Centauri could suggest you some veterinarian in your area.

11 – Is Centauri´s Stem Cell treatment safe?

Yes, it is very safe. The treatment with Stem Cells itself has no side effects because the implanted Stem Cells are the same cells of the animal, once cultured. The sterility of the treatment vials prepared by Centauri is guaranteed. However, it can never be ruled out that there could be an infection during the treatment administration to be performed by the veterinarian, although this probability is very small compared to the expected benefit of the treatment. This potential problem (possible infection) is equally present in conventional infiltrations with corticosteroids and it can be treated or prevented with antibiotics.

12 – Why does Stem Cell treatment work better compared to other treatments?

The differences between treating an inflammatory lesion with Stem Cells compared to doing so with other methods are mainly four:

  • HIGHER anti-inflammatory power of Stem Cells.
  • MORE DURATION of the anti-inflammatory effect because the Stem Cells are implanted in the lesion.
  • REGENERATIVE CAPACITY of the Stem Cells because they are able to differentiate at the tissue where they are implanted and they repair it.
  • LESS SIDE EFFECTS compared to other treatments.

13 – Are Centauri´s Stem Cells the same as those that “other companies” could offer?

Centauri´s Stem Cells are obtained with the highest quality standards. Scientists who have developed the procedure for Stem Cells obtaining are coming from the field of Cell Therapy research for “humans” and have proven experience. Centauri´s laboratory complies with the safety standards and accreditations to offer you all the quality guarantees.

Currently, Centauri offers the obtaining and treatment service with autologous Stem Cells (that is, cells obtained from the same animal who is going to be treated regarding the pathology). The process of cell culture and treatment with Centauri´s autologous cells has all the required traceability and security levels: cell number and growth control, sterility, etc. Remarkably, Centauri is the only company at national level that has specific ISO 9.001 and 14.001 certifications for the cell therapies it is offering. Treatment effectiveness is supported by the results of several treated cases in different pathologies and animal species.

Centauri offers the service in different modalities according to the treatment needs of each animal. Likewise, Centauri offers training to veterinarians so that they could acquire knowledge of the science related to regenerative medicine in veterinary medicine and, in this way, they could administer better treatments. Animal´s owners have different options to choose regarding who is responsible for the Stem Cells treatment administration:

a) they can choose a veterinarian from a veterinarian list who regularly work with Centauri;

b) they can suggest that Centauri should contact their trustworthy veterinarian;

c) they can ask Centauri to assign a veterinarian in their area and to manage the administration of the Centauri´s Stem Cells.

14 – How long does the treatment with Stem Cells last?

Once the treatment order is decided, it takes between one and two weeks to extract a sample of fat and to cultivate the Stem Cells. There are different treatment methods depending on the lesion type to be treated, mainly depending on the lesion severity and whether it is acute or chronic.

Once the treatment with Stem Cells has been administered, the rest of the animal for a few days / weeks will be usually indicated, to start again with a progressive and increasing activity, depending on the lesion.

15 – How is recovery after a Stem Cell treatment?

The lesion recovery after a Stem Cell treatment is usually much faster than the one after a conventional treatment, for several reasons: because it is not an invasive treatment; because Stem Cells have a great anti-inflammatory and regenerative potential; because there are no unwanted effects (side effects) as in other types of treatment.

Once the treatment with Stem Cells has been administered, the rest of the animal for a few days / weeks will usually be indicated, to start again with a progressive and increasing activity, depending on the lesion.

16 – How many Stem Cells are needed for each lesion?

The number of Stem Cells required greatly varies according to the lesion type and animal species to be treated. Centauri, together with your veterinarian, can inform you about your specific case according to our experience. In Centauri we make a personalized study of each case, establishing the administrations number and the cellular concentration depending on each animal. That’s why we are not performing offers based on volume (3 doses, 6 doses …).

17 – How long does the effect of Stem Cell treatment last?

The effect of the Stem Cell treatment is a long-lasting effect and, many times, it represents the cure of the pathology that the animal had. However, the duration varies according to the injury type and to the starting state of the animal. To have a general idea, more than 70% of animals treated by Centauri exceed 18 months of post-treatment improvement without additional treatments need.

Stem cells are implanted at the infiltration site and they tend to persist over time by secreting growth factors and immunomodulatory factors; this is the main explanation of their long-lasting effect. On the other hand, the effect of other treatments does not have as much durability:

  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): The effect duration is limited to the metabolization time (hours or days at the most).

  • Corticosteroid Infiltrations (CORTISONE): The effect can last for days / weeks, but has many unwanted side effects. The most important one is the tissue degeneration if infiltrations are repeated. They have no regenerative effect.

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): This treatment is also offered by CENTAURI, usually in combination with subsequent Stem Cells administration. PRP may be useful as shock therapy because its availability is rapid; however, its effect is limited to “weeks” because platelet factors are attracting anti-inflammatory factors but there is no long-lasting “implantation”. It has not been proven that PRP has regenerative effects over the tissue, effect that Stem Cells have.

Stem Cell treatment:

  • It is the one that has more anti-inflammatory effect
  • It is the one that has the most durability
  • It has regenerative effects over the tissues
  • No known unwanted side effects

18 – What is the treatment with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - Growth Factors?

Platelet-Rich Plasma – Growth Factors is a treatment that Centauri can offer, individually or together with the Stem Cell treatment. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) – Growth Factors is obtained from the animal´s blood and it is administered at the injury site. PRP-contained Growth Factors have a powerful “call effect” over anti-inflammatory factors; hence its anti-inflammatory effect far more potent than the common anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and without the unwanted side effects of cortisone.

The main difference with Stem Cells is that PRP have lower anti-inflammatory potency, and that the PRP anti-inflammatory effect remains less time because growth factors are not implanted at the lesion site; this is an important difference compared to the Centauri´s Stem Cells.

Centauri can offer both the PRP and / or Stem Cell treatment separately or combined as the more appropriate manner for your animal and its lesion to be treated.

19 – What are the differences between Stem Cell treatment and PRP - Growth Factors treatment?

The anti-inflammatory effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) – Growth Factors is more powerful than conventional anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Cortisone, but less potent than Stem Cells.

The duration of the anti-inflammatory effect of PRP is less than the one of Stem Cells.

Both PRP and Stem Cells do not have the unwanted side effects of conventional anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and / or cortisone.

20 – Can Stem Cell therapy be repeated if the lesion persists or a relapse occurs?

Yes. Depending on lesion type, severity and progression, additional doses of treatment with Stem Cells will be required. The first doses will be produced from the starting fat sample, and a portion of them will remain placed at Centauri´s biobank, so it will not be needed to get a new fat sample of the animal. For more information on the different types of treatment suggested for each animal and injury type, ask Centauri.

21 – Is the Stem Cell and / or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - Growth Factors treatment expensive?

Stem cell and / or PRP treatments have the characteristic that their tissue regenerative effect solves many of the pathologies that, with conventional treatment would have to be considered “chronic”. Treatment of chronic pathologies with conventional drugs (anti-inflammatories) has a high price because there is a recurrent cost every month.

You can hire the service of Stem Cell or PRP obtaining through your trustworthy veterinarian.

22 – How much is the Stem Cell and / or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - Growth Factors treatment?

Both Stem Cell and PRP treatments are state-of-the-art treatments. The laboratory where Stem Cells and PRP are obtained has cutting-edge technology. The research investment that Centauri has carried out in order to be able to offer these treatments has been very important. However, the cost of Stem Cell or PRP treatment is not significantly higher than the cost of conventional therapies, because most of them have to be administered continuously for a long time. On the contrary, the Stem Cell and / or PRP treatments have a regenerative component that cures the lesion and it saves future expenses for chronic pathologies.

23 – What is the preservation service of the Stem Cells obtained from Umbilical Cord at the animal´s birth time?

Umbilical cord blood (which links the animal with the placenta) is very rich in Stem Cells. Preserving and processing this blood in a suitable manner allows to obtain a good number of Stem Cells that will be available to the animal throughout its whole life in case they are needed, without having to obtain a fat sample.

The blood collection is a simple procedure; it is sent to Centauri, the Stem Cells are obtained and they are stored for years in liquid nitrogen containers, at -195 ° C, ready to be used when needed.

It is a recommended service for any animal owner who wants to have a good therapeutic arsenal against lesions of bone, muscle, tendon, cartilage, or general diseases that have an inflammatory component.

The healing potential of Umbilical Cord Stem Cells is the same as the one of Stem Cells obtained from a fat sample.

24 – What differences are there between the Stem Cells obtained from Umbilical Cord at the animal´s birth and those cells obtained from fatty tissue once adult?

The differences at healing level are very few, the main difference is the immediate availability of frozen Stem Cells from Umbilical Cord blood (24-hour delivery).

25 – Are Centauri´s Stem Cells the same as those offered by other companies?

Centauri has the knowledge, own facilities, accreditations and adequate security to guarantee the high quality of the Stem Cells that it produces.

Cell culture laboratories are complex and sensitive facilities, which must be isolated from contact with sick animals. That is why is important to not be inside a hospital facility.

In addition, Centauri’s laboratories are not shared with any other company or research group. Centauri neither have “white label brands” nor produces cells for third laboratories.

Therefore, Centauri is the only national company that is certified by Bureau Veritas in ISO 9.001 and 14.001 quality standards specific for veterinary cell culture.

26 – How is the process of obtaining Centauri´s Stem Cells?

Centauri has developed a methodology to in vitro isolate and culture the Stem Cells from a fatty tissue sample of your animal. The process has different stages: fat digestion; centrifugation; Stem Cells characterization and culture; Stem Cells counting; and final preparation of the vial for the treatment. The process includes all the needed quality controls to ensure the quality of the sterility-produced Stem Cells, and of the sample that will be sent to your veterinarian.

27 – What does the Stem Cell treatment mean to me?

In order to offer a Stem Cell treatment, it is needed to have a fat sample of your animal that your veterinarian will send to Centauri to generate the Stem Cells. Centauri will return to your veterinarian a vial with the Stem Cells to administer the treatment. The treatment consists in the Stem Cells injection at the lesion site, just as if it was a “classic infiltration”. Administration can be done at the tendon, muscle, cartilage level or inside the joint. It can also be intravenously administered according to different type of general lesions.

Stem Cells have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and they are implanted where they are administered, so they can regenerate damaged tissues, unlike conventional anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or cortisone.

Once your pet has been treated, it will usually have a brief rest period (depending on the injury type) to progressively start again with the activity. Many times the treatment is definitive, without lesion relapse.

28 – Is there any ethical implication of Stem Cell treatment?

DEFINITELY NO. Do not confuse Stem Cells obtained from embryos from those obtained from a fat sample of an adult animal. In addition, in Centauri we are not using Stem Cells obtained from animals that can act as donors. As responsible consumers, you should refuse these treatments from third-party donors because you could never be sure if the sample extraction has been performed under ethical conditions, and you would not know if the donor animal had any contagious disease (so this practice is not legal).

Centauri only obtains Stem Cells from fatty tissue of your own animal.

29 – Why is it needed to extract a fat sample from the animal to obtain the Stem Cells?

Centauri obtains the Stem Cells from two different sources:

  • From Umbilical Cord: Centauri offers the service of Stem Cells obtaining and preservation from the moment of the animal´s birth. In this way, it is no longer needed to get fatty tissue if the adult animal needs a Stem Cell treatment. Centauri calls the service of Stem Cell obtaining from the Umbilical Cord “Cryo Stem”.
  • From Fatty Tissue: Some Stem Cells are still stored in the fatty tissue. In order to achieve a treatment with a high concentration of Stem Cells, it is necessary to carry out a method of cell culture of Stem Cells from a sample of the animal´s fatty tissue. Once the Stem Cells are obtained, they can be saved for future administrations.

Stem cells can also be obtained from the “bone marrow”. However, Centauri has chosen to obtain the Stem Cells from the fatty tissue because this is considered a less aggressive and safer method for the animal. If your veterinarian would prefer to opt for this option, please contact Centauri to advise you on this regard.

30 – Where is the fatty tissue sample to isolate and culture the Stem Cells obtained?

The area where the sample of fatty tissue is obtained varies according to each animal species. Your veterinarian can inform you about the process in detail. Usually, fatty tissue obtaining is very easy and it only represents a small annoyance for the animal, which is absolutely justifiable having in mind the benefit that Stem Cells will bring to it to solve its health problem.

31 – How is the process of collecting the sample of fatty tissue so that Centauri can obtain the Stem Cells for the animal´s treatment?

It’s very simple. The veterinarian has to:

    • Get a sample with a small amount of fatty tissue from your animal, in a simply manner.

    • Inform the courier following the Centauri-defined procedure; the courier will pick up the fat sample and will send it to Centauri.

Centauri will culture the Stem Cells and will forward them to the veterinarian in a few days in a vial to administer the treatment to your animal.

32 – The Stem Cells can come from fatty tissue or bone marrow, which are the best?

There are laboratories that obtain the Stem Cells from “bone marrow” (that is, the interior of the long bones). On the opposite, Centauri considers more appropriate and practical to obtain the Stem Cells from a “fatty tissue” sample, basically for two reasons:

    • Because obtaining a fatty tissue sample is less aggressive for the animal than obtaining a bone marrow sample (you would have to prick the pelvis or sternum thick bone with a trocar of a certain caliber).

    • Because obtaining a fatty tissue sample is “cleaner” than “bone marrow” obtaining, which results in much less likelihood of contamination of original sample.

33 – Can "shockwaves" be used to regenerate the tendon if the animal has been treated with Stem Cells?

NO, definitely. Although in some cases “shockwaves” or “microwaves” could provide improvement in the treatment of certain lesions, if they are employed after a Stem Cell treatment they could eliminate the expected positive effect of Stem Cells as they could destroy them.

However, if you or your veterinarian would prefer to choose this option, please contact Centauri to advise you on this regard.
